What black tie means
A black tie dress code asks for a black (or midnight navy) dinner jacket with satin facings, matching trousers, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie and black dress shoes. A vest or cummerbund covers the waist.
Black tie optional means a tuxedo is welcome but a dark suit with a tie is also acceptable.
Shawl or peak lapel?
Both are correct for black tie. The shawl lapel is rounded and traditional; the peak lapel is pointed and slightly more formal. The double-breasted tuxedo is the most formal-looking of the three.
